There is a unique sense of anxiety around building an app for a one-night event; as days grow closer, we watch with anticipation as participants sign up to validate an idea…much later than the typical feedback loop for other products. But last month, we were particularly excited to witness just how many people around the country (and beyond) were using one of our products to sign up to share a single meal with complete strangers.

On June 25, T R I M and 14 other organizations including Woman’s March and The Movement for Black Lives partnered with Dream Defenders, a South Florida non-profit, to launch a coast-to-coast night of solidarity and dialogue by sharing a place at the dinner table. By the start of the evening, more than 11,000 participants had committed to being a part of one of 375 hosted dinners, bringing communities together for a meal with meaningful discussion. The Day of Dinners project empowered hosts to hold meals across all 50 states and countries beyond, including Thailand, Mexico and Barcelona.

Dream Defenders created Day of Dinners out of the belief that “creating a better world can start if we open our doors to one another, listen to each other’s stories, and gather to break bread rather than build walls.”

One of our very own product developers, Steve Gilliam, shares a passion for using technology to make an impact on the world. Steve presented the opportunity for T R I M to step in as the technology partner, building a product that could handle the signup and coordinating process that paired hosts with attendees based on their respective locations.

“What I learned is that we, as normal citizens, hold the power. We have the power to fight about injustice and it all starts with a conversation with people that are different. When we connect we are strong. The powers that be know this so they promote fear and division.”

“So grateful for an evening filled with laughter and stimulating conversation with complete strangers. How can we build a better tomorrow if we don’t engage in dialogue? We need more fellowship in our neighborhoods and society. It’s one way to build community.”

We are proud to be a part of such a meaningful project and passionate organization to help better the community. If you are a part of a non-profit with a mission to put a dent in the world, contact us below and let’s discuss working together:

Building Rails forms is a pretty straightforward process but, once in a while, I run into a ‘gotcha’ that needs a simple solution. This week I was building a form where, if the user selects a particular subset of radio buttons, a text field is shown and the user is required to enter a string. The form data is persisted using an enum to capture the radio button selection and a string attribute to capture the text entry if any. The ‘gotcha’ is that the text field input needs to be placed in multiple places within the form, and rails will ignore duplicate parameter names.

To allow the submission of the same input field multiple times, I added an empty array to the input name:

   <input id = “user_text_entry”, name=“user[text_entry][ ]”, placeholder=“Enter text” >
         => [,,”user’s text entered”]

More on parameter naming conventions can be found here.

To implement front end validations, I used jQuery’s :visible selector to ignore the hidden text fields.

var userTextEntry = $(‘.text-required-radio-box’).find(‘*’).filter(‘:input#user_text_entry:visible');

Jr. Full Stack Developer

Trim Agency is seeking a developer to join their startup studio. The ideal candidate will not only love to code, but love to see companies grow from zero to launch.

The Trim product stack is Angular.js / Rails API / Postgress in the Heroku Environment for web apps, and Swift or Java / Rails API / Postgress on Heroku for native mobile. Our ideal candidate is comfortable with API development and Angular.js front ends for zero-to-version-one products, and will fearlessly dissect 3rd party API documentation and implement RESTful, XML, and JSON based web services.

Trim Agency is a startup studio, and practitioners of agile development. We have solved enterprise problems through technology for billion dollar corporations, but our passion is building products for startups through an accelerated co-founder-as-a-service offering. For every project, we form micro teams of one designer, one developer, and one strategist. Our portfolio companies have raised over $2.6 million in funding over the last 18 months, and we are preparing for the next cohort of companies to build, launch, and grow within our portfolio.

We expect our developer candidate to own a consultancy mindset, self-start on product features, and maintain sprint responsibility week-to-week by working closely with product owners and teammates. Our culture is fostered through instituting the importance of the 8 TLC’s (Exercise, Diet, Nature, Service, Relationships, Recreation, Relaxation / Stress Management, and Spiritual Health), and we structure our weekly sprints to include both “inspo days”, as well as paid investment time on Fridays. We are also the “Coolest Office in South Florida” (as named by South Florida Business Journal, 2015), creators of General Provision coworking, and home to Broward’s first coding bootcamp, Wyncode Academy. You can find us in FATvillage, Fort Lauderdale, but our clients are all over the country.

Here is what you must have:

Front End experience with Angular and Flexbox Grid.

1-2 years Experience with Ruby on Rails (Node.js experience is a plus)

Agile Development experience

Familiar with GIT for version control

Standards Based, W3C Compliant Approach

An interest in native mobile development

An interest in machine learning is a plus

Fearless approach to innovation

The passion and awareness for what is next

You must love the web, engage socially, and breath mobile.

You must consider code your craft.

We evaluate our hires in this prioritized order:

Aptitude

Communication Skills

Empathy

Cultural Fit

Leadership Quality

Depth of Specialty

Why our digital consultancy now is home to one of the country’s best programming bootcamps.

If we are serious about sharing what we do, bettering our community, and building a movement in Fort Lauderdale, then we needed to be contributing to that community.

General Provision is proud to announce the addition of Broward County’s first independent programming academy to their FATvillage headquarters this coming April. General Provision has become the new home of Wyncode FATvillage, as the Miami-based accelerated learning program and development bootcamp expands to Broward County.

Wyncode, which began it’s first academy at The LAB in the Miami Arts District of Wynwood, strategically partners with coworking spaces to entrench their students in a startup environment as they learn how to build web applications.

“Computer programming is in high demand in South Florida and we believe that someone who is willing to work hard to change their life and professional direction can get a well-paying job provided they receive the right education”, Wyncode Academy’s co-founder Johanna Mikkola said. “We are thrilled to partner with Trim Agency to bring our program to Ft. Lauderdale, where we have found the perfect venue in General Provision”

The program is full-time, intensive, nine week bootcamp that teaches HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Ruby on Rails. Graduates leave the program ready to join companies as junior web developers and have been hired in tech jobs at a 92% placement rate. Wyncoders have also gone on to start their own companies, such as visual menu app meme.menu and innovative coupon aggregator CouponMate.

Trim Agency’s collaborative work space, branded General Provision, which outfits creative professionals with a vehicle for community, craft, and commerce, was a natural fit for Wyncode. The program is described as the “Art of Code.” Students will have 24 hour access to our facility and it’s amenities as they learn by doing, culminating in a pitch day where they will present their own web apps. Trim Agency will provide test-projects and a first hand look of the inner-workings of a software consultancy.

We will be empowering new developers to build the next great thing; whether it’s for themselves, for Trim Agency, or for another great company. And we think that is really meaningful.
